my machine has been down since august, worked for about 2 weeks, and then friday morning didnt turn on, already replaced the system drive, then the power supply, now im hearing that the mb might be a wrap, ( i hope the cpu dopesnt need replacing either) and my 1 year warranty is over, so this is all coming out of pocket, the moral of the story, DON'T SELL ANY GEAR!!!!!... i feel like a fool for selling the rest of my studio, relying on the miko as my all in one. it lasted exactly a year and 5 months, and since then its been hell... ironically, my mpc 3000 was made in 1996, never ever needed any repairs, and i was the 2nd owner, my asr 10 is from 1991, had to replace my scsi port once, like 7 years ago, no other repairs either. my motif, got it in 2001, never needed any repairs....lucky i kept the motif as a controller. miko tse, 17 months, hard drive failure, power supply failure, mb and or cpu failure, all i can say is wow, i lost a couple of clients, uppanotch album is on hold, ive had a great over all experience with ol staff...but this sucks...open labs should have certified/liscensed repair centers in major markets like nyc, atlanta, la etc, cuz the cost of shipping my machine back and fourth is 50 bucks each way...im going to figure all this out, but i dont see it being my studio anymore, it'll be a part of my studio, having all ur eggs in one basket is def bad for business...

Damn homie...
This is very very disheartening. I dont know what i would do if i started having issues. Shipping back and forth for me would be very very expensive. It was almost 500 just one way. I hope your issues get resolved man. I cant wait to hear some new material from you. -------------------- Physicks

mike c, ramone, chris, and hampton have been extremely cool and helpful from the start, as always, i have 0 complaints on how ol treats me, the situation im in sucks, not open labs service to me. im a very creative and productive person, so not being able to work is what hurts...the miko is still my favorite piece of gear ive ever owned, i just wish i still had the rest of my gear, so i could work around the issue. i dont travel with my miko, it stays in my apt, i dont smoke in my studio room, its just a little crazy that the system drive, the power supple, and now the mb/cpu have failed. whew!!!

Hey Spaulding12.....I think you may be over stepping the line here just a bit. I agree that pushakey is in a real bad situation now and no one ever wants to be without his gear for any period of time, however I think you have put the responsibility in the wrong place asking OL to do more than they have already done. In no way has pushakey, or anyone else here on the forum, suggested that Open Labs needs to go any further than the warranty period and the full support that they always give their customers. Open Labs is historically known for their accessability, support, and willingness to stick with an issue until it is resolved.
Music is a business...and we treat it like a business. I back-up computer files on my desktop, and I have back-ups for EVERY piece of equipment I need to run my music business. Sometimes, we learn by experience. We all do what we can to produce the best product we can. Pushakey is amazing, and I look forward to hearing his new stuff again, very soon! What is your experience with your OL gear? What OL unit(s) are you currently running? Please help us get perspective on your issues from your view of your own equipment. while i wish there had been a way to extend my warranty before it had expired (which they had mentioned in january that that might be possible,) that option never became available, and was not an option when i first purchased my machine. again, i have no complaints in the way ol has treated me, and specifically the tech dept, have been nothing but helpful from the first day i received my miko(ironically, it didnt turn on and wasnt operational when i recieved it, omen?) they spent a lot of time teaching me the ins and outs of the machine, which in itself is priceless, and far more than any other company would do for a customer. alot has gone wrong and it does seem to be all at once, which is really unfortunate. i lost some good clients who know of the issues and dont want to work with me for fear of future malfunctions. i have all my sessions backed up, so i didnt lose any music etc, but i produced the bulk of the uppanotch album and this is holding us up from completing the work and releasing it to the public. the lesson i learned from this is that i cant rely on one machine to be my studio, and having a 2nd computer to use as a workstation/tape machine is critical to running a business. i wish i had kept my other gear that altho it was really old, it worked, and didnt malfunction. so after i repair it, im gonna buy a mac pro and a digi003, and use the miko for vst's etc, and im gonna use an mpc as the center of my studio.

i dont want to mislead anybody into thinking im upset with open labs...far from the case...my hard drive was made by western digital, the mb is asus, the parts that failed arent a result of open labs not making a great product, if anything, they've already done more that any other company would have, my post was really me warning anybody else thinking of selling all their gear, to rethink it and maybe holding on to a back up system is the way to go, especially if the content inside the machine is collaborative and others are depending on it...i think the problem is isolated and doesn't reflect the norm at ol...id still purchase a miko today and when i repair mine ill continue to use it to make music.

its just a little crazy that the system drive, the power supple, and now the mb/cpu have failed. whew!!! What's the make of your line conditioner or surge protector? Cuz you may have dirty power issues. Try to locate a local PC repair shop that can bench test components while you wait. Don't mess with Best Buy cuz they'll overcharge and get it wrong. Good look playa! -------------------- "Don't quote me boy cuz I ain't said $hit"

Pushakey is sent you a pm. Pushakeys I'm offering my hands to help in any way possible that colemang70 can get at me
Now FYI (these are things that I have learned from being in the computer field for many years and having both gear and openlabs in my setup.) Our openlabs units have a different caring process as compared to a piece of hardware 1. The cooling of these units is more critical because of their computer based brain 2. Airflow is super important and you can't block the vents on these units PERIOD. 3. You don't have to beat on these unit like you did what mpc and older gear technology allows for adjustment to provide less pressure to get the same results which in turn will allow your unit to last longer. Some people are abuse their gear 4. I'm sorry but just grabbing new gear and technology isn't for everyone. We all will have to start reading and being patience with new technology or it will break on you. 5. Always have backups from your openlabs is going to your primary unit or if you can afford have a secondary setup to keep the creative juices flowing to prevent total downtime. 6. Anyone that has a computer or any parts of a computer must have spare parts ready on hand with current backups of critical apps and data. The man-made parts will break without warning or notice PLEASE DONT PLAY WITH YOUR CREATIVE DATA WITHOUT HAVING BACKUPS MORE THAN ONE. 7. Always have a partner or go to person when something goes wrong. We have limited cash but someone will help if possible because we all will need help one day. The working environment of old days have to be changed and modified with new computer based technology and gear or it will break on you when you don't want it to. -------------------- I will help if its within the length of my cabletow.

Hello!
Just an FYI....OL Tech has been in touch with Pushakey, and believe we have come to a mutual agreement. I'll leave the details private, but, suffice to say, never let it be said that Open Labs would leave a faithful customer hanging... -mcorley -------------------- Michael Corley

I had been wondering what happened to ya Pusha. Now I know. I am really sad to hear this, but I am glad to know OL has been doing all they can to help you. Your post is my worse nightmare because my NeKo is it for me. I do everything on it. If it's down, then I am down. One of the biggest reasons I purchased it was because of all the videos I watched on OL's youtube page stating how well built and dependable it is.
Fortunately, push come to shove, if my NeKo ever takes a serious dive like yours, I do have another computer and an old audio interface I could hook up and keep rolling, but that would suck. The other day my NeKo gave me a scare. I tried to launch Reaper and got an error message saying the Reaper.exe file was corrupt and that I needed to do a CHKDSK. Since I know DOS, I do understand that message. Reaper opened up anyway, but I shut it down. Then I re-installed Reaper. Tried to launch it again and got the same error message again. Reaper still opened up anyway. Since I needed to complete that session, I went ahead and completed it with no problems. At the end of the night I shut down my NeKo. The next day when time to work on the next project, I turned on my NeKo and my NeKo immediately started performing a CHKDSK all by itself. So I just sat there and let it do it's thing. When completed, I opened Reaper and it launched perfectly with no errors. So everything is still fine right now, but when your entire studio is just one piece... things like that can scare the crap outta you for a moment. I love my NeKo to death. At this point, I still think I made the right decision. I've had it for 7 months now and only one major flaw with it. But OL resolved that for me in a week, so I am still a happy customer. My concern now is I wonder how long my NeKo will last after the warranty expires? Scary thought now after reading your post. -------------------- FunkyBeat
